Backyard Kiwi - is a community driven kiwi recovery project, trapping kiwi predators, releasing adult kiwi, and enhancing kiwi habitat through community managed pest control.
Backyard Kiwi operates an effective kiwi predator trapping programme over much of the private land in the Whangarei Heads area to enable kiwi recovery here.

Pet dogs are one of the greatest threat to wild kiwi, locals and visitors are encouraged to control their pet dogs and “Take the Lead” keeping dogs in at night and walking pet dogs on a lead.

Through ongoing pest and predator control and dog awareness, the kiwi population at Whangarei Heads is growing by an estimated 10% a year when nationwide kiwi are in 2% decline!
